Xavier's Oliveira, UHV's Sturgeon catch RRAC men's soccer weekly awards

WACO, Texas – Gustavo Oliveira of Xavier University (La.) earned selection as the RRAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 7-13, and Matt Sturgeon of the University of Houston-Victoria (Texas) received the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week award for the same dates. This is the eighth set of conference winners for the 2024 men's soccer season.

Oliveira compiled three goals and two assists in a 2-0 week for the Gold Rush. The senior forward from Governador Valadares, Brazil, accounted for a pair of goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Texas College, and he netted a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory over Jarvis Christian University (Texas). Oliveira, the 2023 RRAC Offensive Player of the Year, has 22 goals in 23 career games. He is second in the conference this season in goals (9) and points (22). Xavier is 5-2 in RRAC games and 6-3-1 overall.

Sturgeon helped the Jaguars to a 4-2 win over University of the Southwest (N.M.) and a 7-1 victory over Paul Quinn College (Texas). The senior defender from Hastings, England, organized UHV's defense and overcame an early goal allowed against PQC, enabling the Jaguars to score seven unanswered goals. UHV improved to 4-2-1 in conference play and 6-2-2 on the season.
