TAMUT's Barcenas, Xavier's Suarez named RRAC tennis players of the week

WACO, Texas – Andrea Barcenas of Texas A&M University-Texarkana was recognized as the RRAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 4-10, while Nereo Suarez of Xavier University (La.) captured the RRAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week award for the same dates. This is the sixth set of weekly winners for the 2024 RRAC tennis season.

Barcenas was 3-0 in both singles and doubles as the Eagles won three matches last week against Bethel College (Kan.), Bethany College (Kan.) and Baker University (Kan.). The senior from Mexico City teamed up with Lydia Oviedo in doubles to win matches by scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-0. Barcenas also rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 singles victory against Bethel while claiming her other singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 results. The Eagles are now 6-5 on the season.

Suarez lifted the Gold Rush to two team victories last week including an upset of NAIA No. 6 William Woods University (Mo.). The sophomore from Santa Fe, Argentina, powered past WWU's Zinovil Nahirniak, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, and he surpassed Tom Gutermann of Spring Hill College (Ala.), 6-2, 6-4. Suarez partnered with Jacobi Bain to win doubles matches against WWU and SHC. Eighth-ranked Xavier is now 6-6 on the season with streak of 37 home dual match victories.
