UHV's Chambers, OLLU's Valdez recognized with RRAC softball weekly awards

WACO, Texas – Kenzie Chambers of the University of Houston-Victoria (Texas) was named the RRAC Softball Player of the Week for April 1-7, while Cassandra Valdez secured another RRAC Pitcher of the Week award for the same dates. This is the 10^th set of weekly winners for the 2024 RRAC softball season.

Chambers maintained her hot streak by going 17-for-23 at the plate with nine RBIs and 11 stolen bases. The junior catcher/outfielder from Grand Prairie, Texas, also posted her first home run of the season, an inside-the-park effort in a 5-0 victory over Jarvis Christian University (Texas) on Friday. Chambers set a new single game school record by swiping five bases in a 9-4 defeat of Texas College on Saturday. She also tied the single-game hits record with five in that game. Chambers is on a seven-game hitting streak, raising her average to .538, which is third nationally. UHV is second in the RRAC at 14-4 with a record of 28-8 on the season.

Valdez won three games for the top-ranked Saints last week, two as a starter and one in relief. The graduate right-hander from Brownsville, Texas, also added a save while appearing in a fourth game. She struck out 29 batters while allowing no earned runs and only seven hits in 16 innings of work. Valdez now leads the nation with a 0.43 ERA and is second in strikeouts with 184. OLLU should maintain its No. 1 spot in the nation at 41-1 with a conference mark of 18-0.
